How to Care for Your Djellaba: Washing, Drying & Storage Tips

A djellaba is more than just a garment — it's a piece of Moroccan heritage. Whether yours is crafted from fine gabardine, warm tweed, or lightweight cotton, proper care will keep it looking pristine for years to come.

Washing Your Djellaba

Always check the fabric label before washing. As a general rule:

  • Gabardine djellabas: Hand wash in cold water with a gentle detergent, or use a delicate machine cycle. Avoid wringing — gently press out excess water instead.
  • Tweed djellabas: Dry clean is strongly recommended to preserve the texture and structure of the weave.
  • Cotton djellabas: Machine wash on a gentle cycle with cold water. Turn inside out to protect embroidery and decorative trim.

Drying Tips

Never tumble dry a djellaba. Lay it flat on a clean towel or hang it on a wide-shouldered hanger away from direct sunlight. Heat and direct sun can cause colours to fade and fabrics to shrink.

Ironing & Steaming

Use a low-to-medium heat iron on the reverse side of the fabric. For embroidered areas, place a thin cloth between the iron and the garment. A handheld steamer is an excellent alternative — it refreshes the fabric without the risk of scorching.

Storage

Store your djellaba in a breathable garment bag, away from moisture and direct light. Avoid plastic bags, which can trap humidity and cause mildew. For long-term storage, fold loosely with acid-free tissue paper to prevent creasing.
